| Purely English in its
influence, the Ambassador’s stately presence is
expressed through the precise and understated
carvings of its cabinet. The egg-and-dart
molding cuts deep into exquisite alder wood,
coming to a confluence around a central
medallion that perfectly matches the apron
above. The surround-turn legs feature a reeded
carving embellished with quilted diamonds,
recalling the architectural grace of the
Georgian period. The Ambassador is a throwback
to a timeless era, the Golden Age of Billiards
first introduced by Thurston Company of London,
England, in 1814, and other fine cabinetmakers
like the Wright & Wright Company. Rich in its
sculpture and elegant in its original décor,
future historians will no doubt recall the
Ambassador as one of Dwight Porter’s finest
creations. |
