| Thomas Chippendale was one of
the greatest designers of the English
Renaissance period. In the mid-1700’s he became
the first furniture maker to use mahogany
consistently, a contribution which has affected
all cabinetry design to this day. His products
are recognized as epitomizing English artistry
and grandeur during what is known as the
Chippendale period, roughly from 1745-1779. His
bold, masculine designs were robust and
well-proportioned, architectural without being
monumental. They followed classical proportions
and borrowed classical details, blending ancient
Roman sensibilities with the craftsmanship that
distinguished the golden age of cabinetry. The
hand-carved English shells, the massive
ball-and-claw and the exquisitely contoured
cabinet on our table demonstrate some of the
most famous features of the Chippendale style.
