| The influence of the French on
Renaissance furniture design was extensive. King
Louis XIV was a man of extravagant tastes. His
demand for unique French culture led him to urge
his best designers to create a distinctively
French look. While surfaces were kept flat in
the early period of the Renaissance, King Louis
XIV encouraged elaborate carving and scrollwork,
richly chased fruit and floral motifs, swags and
leafage. The intricately carved floral motif
found in the center of the panels is in the
“Buhl” style developed in the late 1600’s by
artisan Andre’ Boulle. The rounded cabriole
knees and the elegantly styled floral pattern
(which repeats throughout the panels)
demonstrates elements from a later period in
French cabinet making. The foot of each leg also
refers to a floral motif, while its firm, flat
base shows off the solid durability of
Renaissance craftsmanship. |
