| The rebirth of the classical
tradition in Italy in the 15th century heralded
a new age for the arts. Among the leaders of the
revival was architect, sculptor and stonemason
Andrea Palladio, whose use of Roman and Greek
arches, carvings and perfect proportions
influenced designers around the world. His
impact on cabinetry was so far-reaching that
even today, nearly 500 years later, the most
exquisite designs still borrow from his themes.
Our table mirrors Palladio’s greatest
achievements. Following a Louis XV table design,
this is predominantly a French court piece with
English effects, a combination that reflects the
merging of aesthetic ideals and practical needs
during the golden age of cabinetry. Note the
arched lines of the side cabinets, the richly
detailed Victorian legs and the beautifully
hand-carved ribbons that trail around each side.
The Palladian’s sensibility of superior
craftsmanship, melded with the timeless lines of
ancient architecture, create a table that will
also be in style. |
